I am a feminist.
A part-time polemic.
A champion of Underdogs everywhere.
A story-teller.
These are things which provide the filters through which I view our world. Initially, photography was a vast expanse; an opportunity to indulge all of my creative whims; I wanted to try anything and everything – and that’s exactly what I did. Some artists know exactly who they are right away, while others of us need time to explore and find that which resonates.
I was one who needed time.
Fashion Photography is a delicious realm because, like most people, I am drawn to beautiful things. It’s a world that appears to exist – we want so much to believe it exists - but actually doesn’t exist at all. It’s playing pretend in the most fabulous and intoxicating sense. Edward Steichen, Richard Avedon and Irving Penn have inspired and influenced me tremendously here. And, not unlike these particular photographers, I was also drawn to Fine Art Photography.
Figurative fine art photography, actually: The face, the body, our human condition - an exploration of those things which reveal who we truly are. I pay particular attention to hands and faces; a face, after all, is capable of a thousand lies but the hands will always tell the truth.
I’ve learned a lot in that regard from studying Alfred Stieglitz’s 30-year composite of Georgia O’Keeffe. In fact, Sally Mann, Diane Arbus, Stieglitz, and Dorothea Lange have influenced me deeply when it comes to photographing people.
Good photographs are a combination of many things but a great photograph radiates honesty and a certain sense of vulnerability. These are traits, I think, we subconsciously seek in others anyway so, when we recognize them in an image, it causes us to linger and examine; we’re drawn to these images without really even understanding why. To me, this is the perfect photograph.
I find that these two worlds create the perfect dichotomous space in which I can create and explore – they also provide a crucial balance; a yummy combination of sweet and savory, if you will. Add to that my fascination with the seedy and not-so carefully hidden underbelly of humanity - well, I’m actually never quite sure what other types of images will make it into the mix. The bottom line is that I have an insatiable curiosity about things which I only prefer to examine through the lens; so, in that vein, I’m still exploring.
Always exploring and finding new layers to pull away.
